Nissan bring back Datsun brand

Date Listed: 23/03/2012

Nissan’s chief executive Carlos Ghosnhas has announced plans to re-launch the budget Datsun brand, 30 years after removing the models from its lineup, within emerging markets.

Datsun cars were sold between 1932 and 1981 and once held a 6% share in the UK car market. The vehicles were renowned for being reliable and affordable and it is reported that Nissan will invest £250 million in its assembly plant near Jakarta to increase production.

Vehicles will go on sale from 2014 in Indonesia, India and Russia – although it is unlikely that Datsun will be returning to UK markets.

The new generation Datsun is not the only big news for Nissan this month; it was also announced at the Geneva Motor Show that Nissan is to create 2,000 British jobs at its UK car factory in Sunderland, by building a new family car named ‘Invitation’.
