The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced that from November, MOTs for pre-1960 cars will no longer be compulsory; although this does not mean owners are exempt from keeping their vehicles in a roadworthy condition.
The DfT have said, “Owners of classic cars are enthusiasts who will maintain their vehicles to a high standard”. Figures show that owners of classic cars have a far lower accident and MOT failure rate.
Some opposition to the new ruling has come from Classic Monthly Magazine editor, Gary Stretton. He believes that the scrapping of the MOT for classic cars will result in higher insurance premiums and possible legislation restricting the usage of older vehicles.
Roads Minister, Mike Penning has said; “We are committed to cutting out red tape which costs motorists money without providing significant overall benefits.”
Owners of classic cars will still be able to take their vehicles in for MOT testing voluntarily.
